Falstaff at the Royal Opera House

Description

Old, large and lecherous, Sir John Falstaff can’t resist food or the ladies. But he gets more than he bargains for when he attempts to seduce two married women, who plot to have fun at his expense! Verdi’s comic swansong returns to the Royal Opera House in the first revival of a witty and exuberant production by Robert Carsen, who draws clever parallels between the two Elizabethan ages - Alice Ford’s 1950’s state of the art kitchen is a particular delight. There are plenty of musical delights too, as Ambrogio Maestri – Possibly the greatest Falstaff of today – leads a vibrant young cast under the baton of Michael Schonwandt. With a brilliant, fast paced score following every twist and turn of the plot, interwoven with passages of exquisite tenderness, and a great finale in praise of laughter and life itself, Falstaff is one of the greatest comic achievements in opera, and provides a fittingly joyful close to the season
